Does having kids really stretch out your vagina?

The simple answer is: it depends. In most cases, your vagina returns to its normal, prebirth size. It’s incredibly elastic and made to give birth. How elastic your tissue is depends several factors, like the size of your baby, the number of children you’ve had, your age, whether you smoke or have other health issues, and genetics. To help return your vagina to its proper size, make sure to do Kegel exercises. They really do work. If you don’t see signs of tightening, you may be experiencing symptoms of vaginal prolapse, a condition in which the muscles that hold your vagina in place are weakened and your vagina may literally fall a bit. Talk to your doctor about the several options available to help with this issue.

What does a routine Pap smear show? What other tests should I ask for?

The Pap test, otherwise known as the Pap smear, tests for abnormal cells in the cervix. If abnormal cells are found, it means you could have an infection, or that these cells could develop into cervical cancer, which, if detected early, can be treated more effectively. This is why routine Pap tests are so important.

A Pap test does not test for human papillomavirus (HPV) or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and HIV.

What are Kegel exercises? How do I do them?

Named after Dr. Arnold Kegel, these exercises are pelvic-floor-muscle-strengthening exercises designed to treat urinary incontinence and genital prolapse, a condition in which the vaginal canal falls and protrudes out of the vagina, most commonly because of a weakened, stressed pelvic floor after childbirth (totally understandable). Even when there is no prolapse, Kegels help tighten a stretched vagina after childbirth. As a bonus, strong vaginal muscles that develop from Kegel exercises can increase sexual gratification.

To find the right muscles, try stopping the flow of urine. These are the correct muscles to flex. You can also ask your doctor for guidance.

While sitting, hold the squeeze for a ***** of 4-5 seconds, release, then repeat. Make sure to isolate the muscles and don’t squeeze your thighs, abs or butt muscles. Do this for five minutes total, twice a day. It takes anywhere from six to eight weeks to see results. If you don’t see results, consult your doctor.

What are cervical or ovarian cancer symptoms to watch for?

Cervical Cancer
Cervical cancer occurs when there is an excess of abnormal cells in your cervix. It’s often linked to HPV, a sexually transmitted disease that can live in your body for years without you knowing it. The good news is that cervical cancer can be treated and cured if these cells are detected early. This is where you’d thank yourself for getting routine Pap smears, so be sure to see your doctor regularly.

Symptoms of cervical cancer include:
• Unusual vaginal bleeding between periods, after sex or after a pelvic exam
• Unusual, heavy discharge that may smell bad and contain mucus
• Pelvic pain that doesn’t feel like menstrual cramps
• Pain during urination or sex

Ovarian Cancer
Ovarian cancer occurs when abnormal cells are found on your ovaries. Unlike cervical cancer, ovarian cancer doesn’t have a routine test to detect its presence and its cause is unknown. It’s usually detected when a doctor feels a lump during a routine pelvic exam, although not all lumps are cancer. Ovarian cancer is often cured when detected early, so be sure to schedule your annual exam.

Early symptoms include:
• Abdominal bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain
• Frequent urge to urinate or urinating more often than normal
• Feeling full quickly while eating

Advanced symptoms include:
• Change in bowel movements
• Pain during sex
• Persistent fatigue
• Abdominal weight gain
• Sudden weight gain or loss

If you have any of these symptoms for more than two weeks, see a gynecologist.

Can I have sex while I’m pregnant?

Absolutely. You can have sex up until your water breaks, as long as you don’t have issues like placenta previa, bleeding or cervical weakness. You may have to get creative with positions, but it’s completely OK.

Having sex will not cause a miscarriage or premature birth. And it won’t harm your baby – Junior is naturally protected by the amniotic sac and your strong uterus muscles. Plus, the mucus plug seals the cervix, protecting it from infection.

As your baby grows, he or she may feel a little tickling from the ***** during sex or may move around a bit after you orgasm, but this is most likely because of your escalated heart rate and, rest assured, the baby is not being harmed in any way.
